Pre/Post Natal Massage
Pregnancy, Labor and Postpartum are very powerful and transformative times in a woman’s life and massage therapy is a wonderful way to help assimilate all the exciting changes.
I have trained with and am certified by Claire Marie Miller, one of the nation's leaders in massage therapy and creator of Nurturing the Mother®. I am able to offer safe and therapeutic pregnancy massage, labor support massage, and postpartum massage. Research has shown that pregnancy massage strengthens the immune system, decreases blood pressure, decreases stress hormone, shortens labor time, and helps restore the body in the postpartum phase. I work in a supporting role to your physician, midwife, and/or doula. I am also able to demonstrate and teach the woman’s partner how to offer massage support at home and during labor.
Much of the prenatal massage will take place in the side-lying position. But adjustments will always be made to ensure yours and the baby’s comfort. Extra attention is given to the upper back, neck and shoulders, as well as, the low back and hips, these are two common areas where discomfort arises from pregnancy.
Receiving a massage after giving birth is a great way to start the process of bringing the body back to its pre-pregnancy state. Some benefits of postpartum massage are that it supports and enhances the realigning process, with focus on the pelvis and ribs. It aids in releasing tension in the shoulders, neck and arms from the care and feeding of an infant. It supports fluid balancing and encourages pelvic and abdominal organs to return to pre-pregnant positions.
I am one in a network of health and wellness professionals in the Washington, DC area that focus on the wellbeing of the mother. Whether or not you want to come in for a massage I am always more than happy to refer you to other professionals that can support you during this process.
